Free workshops linking beef producers with industry experts

Hunter Local Land Services will host a series of Regional Producer Update workshops, to provide advice and support to landholders battling drought and dry conditions across a large proportion of the region.

The events in Scone, Wingham and Tocal have been tailored to each district, offering a mix of industry advice on current conditions in the beef market, support on managing during dry times and animal health guidance from our District Vets.

These workshops follow on from seasonal condition workshops in October 2017, where industry experts warned of a dry season ahead and urged producers to make the hard decisions early when it came to preparing their herd and properties for drought.

“Landholders are reporting unprecedented conditions on their properties, after both normal spring rain and decent summer storms have failed to eventuate,” said Justine Baird, Regional Pastures Officer for Hunter Local Land Services.

“Many producers have chosen to offload stock because of critical feed and water shortages, however some are still grappling with these hard decisions.

“These workshops will help connect landholders with industry experts, our staff and other support services that can assist them as we move into autumn and winter.”

The Upper Hunter producer update at “Thornthwaite” on 22 February 2018, will focus on drought management advice including early weaning, water management, animal health issues, producer experience for managing drought conditions and financial assistance options.

“The Wingham and Tocal events will also include advice about managing in dry times, as well as a presentation from Meat and Livestock Australia, and a processor update from Wingham Exports, providing crucial market information for producers,” said Ms Baird.

“We want to help producers make the best decisions for their situation, in what has been an unfortunate season so far.”

The events will also feature a number of trade stalls from seed, fertiliser and water solutions retailers, as well as Local Land Services and other support agencies, offering landholders the chance to secure one-on-one advice or product consultations.

Videos from these events will also be shared via Facebook and Youtube after the event, for landholders that cannot attend.
